Flags

Irises by any other name are still beautiful. This is a vintage iris that I picked up outside of Cleveland about six years ago.

I have been having a bad couple of days. Yesterday, I began my day with a migraine. Even after medication and more sleep, I remained groggy all day. Today, I am plagued by vertigo. Actually, it the Meniere's Disease rearing it's ugly head. It's all the same though. I am tipsy and nauseous. I think, I should at least have gotten drunk to feel like this. Ugh! Enough of my complaining.

I have been re-visiting some of my short stories and flash fiction stories to fix them up. Trying to find markets for them. So, though the head is to annoying to focus on writing, I have continued in pursuit of my dream. My dream is to see my work in print.

At the Write-on Writer's Conference, we discussed electronic publishing. I fear that in the near future we won't be seeing so many print books. That saddens me. I love the smell of books both new and old. Each have their own unique presence. I love the feel of the covers, especially on the old ones. I love turning the pages of a new story. I hope that this new phase of e-books doesn't replace all print books for a very long time.

Now, I am not saying there is no merit in electronic publishing. I have purchased some e-books. They are nice for quick gratification. I, also, enjoy many of the sites online that publish stories to read for free. As my friend would say, free is good. -Rita

All's Quiet on the Western Front... Make that Mid-western front.

The pets and hubby are napping. I am just clicking away on this old keyboard. It is a quiet afternoon. I think I will join everyone for a nap after I post this blog.

I took some pictures of my flowers. I will post them tomorrow. Taking pictures seem to help me in my writing.

Speaking of writing, my niece is going to have her poem published in an anthology of poems. Poetry.com has selected her for this honor. I am proud of my little BusyBeth though she is all grown up now. I really haven't called her by her nickname for a very long time. It brings back sweet memories of this beautiful baby who was always on the go from the time she learned to walk. Alas, it is also true today. The child only slows down when she is sleeping.

There's a lesson in here someplace. If you write it, submit it. If you are not writing then write and then submit it. -Rita

Violets and Dandylions

Violets and Dandylions are a sure signs of spring. These hardy little flowers that many people try to defeat add color to an otherwise green lawn. I for one don't despise this burst of color. Maybe, that's the kid in me?

Violets are a hardy ground cover that can be mowed and the tiny little flowers will grow back. Dandylions are actually a useful herb. Their leaves can be used for salads or cooked for their greens. Wine can be made from this versatile weed. Plus, children love to gather these lovely yellow blooms for their moms. Or they will make wishes by blowing the white seed into the wind. I would rather embrace these two hardy flowers than to fight them.-Rita

Violets and Dandylions

Violets your colors are true. White, pink and purple. Through snow, rain and winds you prevail. Keep on gracing my yard with your presence.

Dandylions you rear your yellow heads. The mower doesn't keep you down. Against our best efforts you prevail. When yellow turns to white you spread your seed.

Violets and Dandylions don't let me down. Keep adding color to my field of green. Spreading your joy to both young and old. -Rita Lynn

What a beautiful day it has been. The birds are singing, dogs are barking, and children are playing. Flowers are blooming.

My Rhododendron Bush in Flower. My neighbor says hers barely blooms and my blooms twice a year. I don't know why this is, I don't do anything special. Mine might just get a little more shade during the hottest part of the day. I know I planted it in humus, other than that I mostly just need to keep the clematis from growing over it.

I wrote two short stories today. I decided that I need to keep in practice, since I am not writing a poem daily. I am spending time writing everyday. I think I need to keep this up if I want to get published. I still need to find Miri's voice again. Or Bell's and Wolf's in my other story.
The kittens are keeping me entertained lately. They are so cute. I think they frustrate Dinny, because they won't run from him. The two older cats will. Dinny loves to chase. The kittens look at him, when he woofs rudely in their ears, like they are saying what's up with you? Artie found a new hiding place tucked right into Dinny's tail. Remember, I call Artie my shadow cat? Or maybe that was on another blog. Artie doesn't show up in most pictures because he blends into the shadows.

The flowers have been blooming, everything is turning green and today I woke up to snow. Yes, you heard me, I said snow. That wicked four letter word. Fortunately, it didn't last and it was gone by ten o'clock.

I know this is not a very good picture, but maybe you can see the white snow contrasting with the greens of spring. I just snapped a quick pic of it. It was much too cold to be out barefoot and in short and a tank.

Saturday, I took some great pictures of flowers.

My Rhododendron Bush.

The neighbors tulips, mine haven't bloomed yet.

My forsythia bush.

I guess, April is playing an April Fools joke on us or is it just me? It is supposed to get warmer tomorrow and the rest of the week. I hope so, because I want to get outside and write.-Rita
