Writing

I have been busy writing...

I have been trying to figure out where to go with Full Moon. Okay, so that is not quite correct... I know how it's going to end, but I need to fill out the story. Right now it's all action. I need to make my characters come alive for you, the reader. So, I am working on that.

I have a story ready for The Writers and Poets on Painters Challenge on February 6 for the Art Walk in downtown Zanesville. As usual, it's a dark piece.

I wrote a fluffier piece based on a picture I posted on the Y-City Writers' Forum Blog.

During the Y-City Writers meeting I wrote a poem based on Traci's prompt...Then the rains came... I am posting my rough draft here. Feel free to comment.

Then the Rains Came
by Rita L. Smith

Desert heat
Parched land

Then the rains came

Desert life
Cacti bloom

Then the rains came

Desert Floods
Heat returns

Kudos for the effort, and the courage you show by letting us see a rough draft. First, most drafts start out somewhat ugly, no matter who writes them. Regarding the poem in this draft, it seems more like brief exposition than poetry. The repetition is good, and begins to suggest musicality but does not quite get there. Also, there is scant sense of metaphor or secondary meaning. When I read it, my reaction was "so what?" What makes the subject and content of this poem important? You have not made me care. Poetry is more than reporting the facts.
